After Effects Of The 1st Semester At GNLU As A Law Student

1 semester old at the law school. Yet it feels only yesterday that the results came out for CLAT and I decided that it had to be GNLU. The reasons behind that were many. Few of them silly others werent reasons at all. The major reason behind joining GNLU was the gut feeling and now its been proved, atleast to me that the gut feeling is something that can be trusted. It can make your life. So now that I am back I reflect upon the life there and what I learn from my experience in GNLU.

Here we go-

1. Before coming to law school, all your guy friends would be very happy that they have a lawyer friend and will extract promises out of you to save their asses from rapes and murders that they are so sure they are going to commit. Talk about confidence in the future. Is law still the Sunny Deol in the court scene where there are two lawyers joking there way around and a judge looking as if he is asleep or more likely dead. GUYS SERIOUSLY, LAWYERS HAVE BETTER WORK TO DO THAN WHAT THEY SHOW IN BOLLYWOOD. Sorry but I am not fighting any of your imaginary rape cases.

2. Food is really precious and as mentioned by a senior, you might leave the mac book pro out in the open, but food stays locked inside the deepest and darkest areas of your cupboard. Food is really precious if its good, and in hostel any food thats not mess food is absolutely yummy. So whenever you get them it incites the entire hostel to conspire against you to take it away from you. So you learn to master the art of lying and keeping secrets.

3. If you are at GNLU then you start missing traffic. Especially if you are from places like Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore then you actually start hating the empty streets. When was the last time you traveled 10 kms in 15 minutes. In Mumbaoi that happens only when.... It doesnt happen and I had never thought that I would miss traffic. But it happened I would do anything to get stuck in a traffic jam. Empty roads drive you crazy.

4. Keep accounts of the money that you spend daily, every 1 rupee coin, 2 rupees coin, 5 rupees coin, 10 rupees note, 20 rupees note, 50 rupees note, 100 rupees note, 500 rupees note, 1000 rupees note. Once you do this you realise its pointless and if people find out then they will either die laughing or will kill you for doing that. Spend as much as you want. Go bankrupt by the 15th of every month, but spend it on your friends. They will take care of the other 15 days of the month without counting the coins and notes that they spend on you.

5. Suddenly people back home want to discuss suits and civil and tort cases with you, though they have no idea what a civil case and absolutely alien to Tort. They think thats since you can discuss basic level stuff of their subjects they can do the same. If you count out English, which anyway sux to study then they absolutely cant discuss anything related to what you study in the Law School. And they make you feel that you actually know so much about the stuff from the other world.

6. The amount of study that you do on the last day and night can actually break all records or at least equal records, since you cant put in more than 24 hours of work in a day. Thats how my entire semester has passed and till now I am pretty happy with my scores. I guess its just a law school thing, last moment stuff works pretty well. But it takes you all the courage to shake off a week of slumber to put on the work your ass off mode.

7. Your clothes start changing colors, literally. It makes you appreciate the value of the house maid to no extent. How the hell do they manage to wash 100s of clothes and wash dishes and clean and sweep without a single cloth changing its color? Personally I am gonna ask her for the recipe of success tomorrow. Because every combination of time, surf and water has resulted in a disaster for me.

8. You start defying all the biological clocks possible. You sleep when the sun rises and dont wake up till its just risen. Yeah, basically you are sleep deprived. Its a real rarity and the best place to sleep is college when the classes are on. If you cant do that then you must seriously consider an alternate career before its too late. Because then either you die or you are too sincere for a law student.

9. You try your best to show off every where that you have profound knowledge of law even if you are a first semester student because you are soon going to receive an llb degree and there is a good chance that you have no idea what that stands for. But the point is its too much fun to show off your knowledge of statutes and random sections of random acts, most of it made up using whatever you know and converting it as per the situation and will.

10. If you are on a long distance relationship and you hear people tell you it wont work then believe them. Because if you do then you get to have a go again at dating some one new. But if you dont take that advice then just be proud that your relation is strong enough to handle the long distance. If you believe then it works. If you dont then it doesnt, so its totally your call and not an act of God.

11. Every piece of news fro outside world will shock you because inside the world of GNLU there is just not enough time to keep in touch with the world and you get detached to the outer world. facebook becomes the official news reporter and you get all the news off facebook rather than the usual news papers and news websites.

12. Suddenly you crave for the food that your mom makes and you think about it day and night at the lunch and dinner. And once you reach home after a semester you ask your mom to make that dish which she made the day you left and you had frowned at the last meal being so simple and nothing special.

13. If you are in the 1st semester and had expected to come to a class that was right out of Jefferey Archer's or John Grisham's books in which the classes are interactive with smart students back answering every question thrown at them, then you would be dissapointed. Because half the class would be asleep and the other half trying to stop themselves from falling asleep. And as for the lecturer, he/sh tries the best to put you to sleep, so there goes your interactive class.

14. Dont get too excited about field trips, its just the bus rides that are important. Try to catch up with maximum sleep during that time because an opportunity to sleep shouldnt be given up. And as for the field thing, you hardly see anything so no point in keeping your eyes and ears open, so just stay back in the bus and continue with the sleep. It would be the best utilization of time.

15. Make friends in the hostel. These will be the people who will be there in every aspect of your life at college and at hostel, when you pass and when you fail, when you are rich and when you are poor, when you are on a low or when you are high and later in your life as well. Thats the kind of friends you make in the hostel. So just find those special people and they ensure your journey remains smooth in the college. To put in simple words of a friend of mine, in the hostel the friendship goes to a new level.. Its like I am the best man at your marriage and you are the best man at mine..

Thats how simple or complex life seems inside and outside the college, and I say that though I am just 1 semester old. The best part of being a law student though are two of my favourite lines that I have been using over and over again, all the while laughing my head off while trying to keep a straight face.

1) Situation- I have wronged someone and he is angry. He rants at me and speaks of how the world is unfair to him.

Response- If you think that this is in any way unfair then let me explain.... You o round and round till he is so pissed that he has no idea what to do and he shouts.

Then you say- You actually have no legal grounds to prove what you are saying so yeah sure sue me in court. It will be tossed out before you could say "compensation"

2) Situation- You are pissed at someone who has wronged you or atleast you want to believe that the person has wronged you or maybe you just wanna have some fun.

Response- You know you have violated XYZ right of mine mentioned in XYZ article of XYZ act which can lead to XYZ amount as punitive damages and XYZ amount as exemplary damages and XYZ amount as XYZZZZZZZZ damages and trust me I will make it happen. So you can expect a legal notice from me and we will meet in court unless you want to change your mind. Last opportunity.. Take it or we meet in the court (The Supreme Court if the person is really lost already).

(All the XYZ's are the test of your creativity and thinking on your feet skills)

University (like really)

Sorry folks, been a long time since I last put up something. Been keeping a little busy off late but finally something that I had to put up on the blog. So today was the last day I officially went to college in the 1st semester. Its the end of a semester and I cant believe how quickly its gone. But its true when they say good times fly away as quick as you dont want them to. So its happened and the place that feels so much like a home to me is gonna chuck me out for two months. Not that I wont b coming back, but this has been a dream for me and it really was home for me (not trying to sound like Harry Potter, but really I cant help it that he choose to be like me)

Anyway coming to the point, the hype about going to a university is so huge that it gives you you goosebumps before reaching that place. Its as if you have landed on hell and one wrong step and you will be served for dinner in the form of curry. People give you lectures about how you are going to a university now (Thank You uncle, had you not told me, I would have had no idea about that.) and that now you cant waste your time like you did when you were in school. Its these years that will make or break your career. Dont fall into wrong company. Keep a goal, focus towards achieving that goal. And make the goals short term and strive to achieve them one at a time at any cost and BLAH.....................

The day I landed at Gujarat National Law University I thought about hostel and nothing else. Yes I want to be a lawyer but if I stay within my limits and have tons of fun then its not gonna tear apart my future and my career, so I can afford to think about hostel and how I looked forward to staying away from the shackles that bound me (thou shall not blame me for this. Its my ************** English teacher and Shakespeare, and dont count the stars trying to fill them up, its been put randomly).

I was one of the first person to move into the hostel and on the very first day I along with Inspector and Yudi decided to travel to Ahmedabad to catch a movie. The best part was
1. We had no idea which movie we would be watching
2. We didnt know how we would be going.
3. Once we made it to the bus stop we didnt know which one to take. People or sign boards were of no help. (Only Gujju)
4. Once we somehow boarded a bus that had a conductor shouting Ahmedabad Ahmedabad, we had no idea where to get down.
5. After someone told us where to get down for PVR, we found a cinemax on the way, got the bus stopped and hurried out to find that the movie we wanted to watch was not showing. Didnt matter as we anyway watched a movie and thats how it all began

Friends make life much more easier and thats been a real factor in making life at GNLU so awesome.
I have no idea what I am writing in this blog as the experience has been too good and I do not know which part to write and which part to leave out. So I guess I will just thank the friends who have made this place so awesome.

Starting with the person I met first and someone who became a friend so easily that you wouldn't know we have been friends for just the past three and half months. Yudi.

We did have a few fb chats to show before we came to GNLU and we met at the college during the admissions. I remeber looking for familiar faces from fb and you are the only one I recognised in the beginning. We met, shook hands and that was it for that time. But as we moved into the hostel on the very 1st night we talked and talked to the extent that we knew about each others girl friend by the time we went to sleep. And what happened next morning was described above. We hit off so well that I can easily include him among my all-time best friends list along with loads more people here at GNLU (*read Trip and Granger, Dimpy, NikR, Anju, Inspector, Tunn, Angry Bird (:P) etc.)

From being the joker of the group to being called the dalal, everything has been special with you and I know (not hope) that this is how the rest of the 9 semesters are gonna pass. Full of Buckchodi. Inclusive of everything from running off to ahmedabad with no idea what we are doing to scampering to the night mess to get a packet of lays to be shared among 5 people. Its been too much fun and thank you for that. I have to keep it short else I will go on forever. So yeah, thanks for making this place what it is. Strange how its ending so early. Seems like yesterday we shook hands as strangers. But we will be back next semester with all guns blazing.

Going by the chronological order of the people I met, next person is the simplest person I have ever met. And its unbelievable that this is a person who had been living in Singapore for the last 4 years.
Inspector

The incredible lifestyle this guy has, is something that I can not comprehend. Its almost as if he is from the past century transported to this one, just to make us feel ashamed of how terrible our life styles are. Well our 1st adventure to Ahmedabad will stay forever in my mind but thats not all is it? Everything here has been spiced up by your antics and expressions. I remember how during the first days you used to get butter milk from a near by dairy and you had expressed your idea of asking him to deliver it on a daily basis, if more people would be interested in the same. Though you deny it I remember it very well.

The best part is your violent streak, its something that sparks up the dullness whenever that sets in. All one needs to do is as much as touch you as if he were gay and you would be on him spanking the hell out of him. I am tempted to post a video here but then I fear I wouldnt live to see the sun set again should I do that. So I will spare you that. But its not something thats imbibed in us as a shameful memory. Its basically a memory of how dynamic you can be and how much fun it is when you are at your violent best. And as you are the official know-all-girls, guy of our batch, you wouldnt need this but still  here's wishing you best of luck as you set out on the path of that 1 girl who is different from the others, who I think you have identified. Keep guessing guys, not that difficult.

Next person I met was someone I had been really looking forward to meet cuz we had had small chats and loads of discussions on the LST group on GNLU. I expected a dude and I wasn't dissapointed. But I hardly thought of him to be a guy who would be so easy going and so damn friendly that today all I need to tell him is that I am hungry and trust me he will turn in every last coin he has till I am no longer in that state.
Trip

On the LST group we had no idea in common especially football. You supported Arsenal and Barcelona while for me it was Manchester United and Real Madrid. So I remember the match nights when there were the silly arguments and all. But that was hardly important, I figured it out that since you were very active on that group and seemed really well aware of loads of things in the world that I hadnt heard of, you would most probably land up in a college among the top 3. And since my dream of the same was shattered your presence was atleast a small consolation that I wasnt coming to a place where the undeserving landed up and it was true that NUJS did actually screw us up real bad.

Then our journey began at this place with Arsenal, Barca, United and Madrid and today its at a place where I am almost living in your room. And once we are in the new campus in the next sem we will actually be implementing the idea you had and living in a room together with Tunn and Yudi. And that will be the time when we can exponentially increase our buckchodi . Its been a real pleasure being a friend of yours and to think we have 9 times the time we have spent together already here at the most unhappening place on earth, making it the center of the universe, gives me goosebumps in the bright way. Looking forward to the future and wondering how the next two months are gonna pass without the charm of 31/7  :P

Moving to the fairer sex since I cant go on about every friend I have over here.

The first female friend I made in this place is also the bubbliest of them all. She can hardly keep quiet for a minute before she bursts out and there is hardly anything thats intermediate for her. Lives in total extremes and thats what makes her what she is. An awesome (tear shedding machine and nerve cutting instrument) friend and and awesome person.
NikR

3 months back I met you outside the hostel gates and at that time I was confused as to what I am supposed to say because 90% of the people were from Bangalore and you were one of the quietest among all the people. Somehow I cant get back the video of that despite having a really good photographic memory. Its just that those are hardly true images. Trust me if anyone can replace Kareena Kapoor in JWM its you and it has been an utter privilege being a friend of some one who will very soon be a celebrity. Trust me on that. Either you make a hot shot lawyer who doesnt let opposition speak, or you make a huge name in Bollywood. If neither works out (though I am sure one of them will) then we have our book. Once thats published we anyway will be royalty (though its author's royalty, but still)

Will never forget that day when we went to Su's place for her birthday stay over. The night was hilarious with all the madness going on in the house. And the fact that we made the Sane Charter also is really cool. Its hilarious to watch you cut your nerves daily at the slightest thing and also shed thousands of tears on slightest of touching moments. But thats great, dont ever let that change. Wanting to shoot every female teacher and falling in love with every male teacher. Its to much fun, and no one can entertain like you when you are in the mood (which is almost always) and for the rest of the time I am always there to take up that role. Its getting over so soon, the semester and you are the one person who loves this place as much as I.. So I know how much you will miss this place. But before I forget You Are Coming To Mumbai In The Hols. You promised and no backing out now.

Bushy hair, studious nature, truest friend and hands forever ready to shoot up to answer questions. Not just random name that I gave you,
Granger

The 1st impression of yours that I had was surprise, because you told me you  were from Kolkata and being from Orissa myself I can easily tell if a person is from WB and you did not look like one. But then after a few days of class I realised yeah well.. She is from Kolkata, no doubt. Not acting regional or anything like that, its just that people from there are generally well learned and I have seen them in class, I dont doubt you are from that place. Not in the negative sense, how can it be when the maximum that I learn in eco class is from your explanations. And then I realised you are right out of the Harry Potter series and fits perfectly. Kinda makes me Potter  :P

I know the lows and highs you have been through are not something idea but then I am such a bollywood lover that its the happy ending that matters. And in this case its not about being happy, its true ecstasy that now exists and I hope for its unlimited continuance. Your presence has made a huge difference to life at GNLU and with loads of time to come at this place one can imagine the tons of fun that we have in store.

As the night is turning into morning I feel really sleepy and there are atleast two more people I have to mention here, as this would be thoroughly incomplete without the two of them. But since I am so sleepy I will skip 1 person because I dedicated an entire blog to her on her birthday. That person is
Dimpy

Yeah, as if I would really be skipping a thank you to her for my sleep. ;)
Its been terrific knowing a person like you. Unique piece you are. Like I said on your birthday post I haven't known someone who shows all these characteristics (mad, crazy, insane, terrific, crazy and hilarious) and yet be one of the sweetest person around. The buckchodi that you do with NikR is too childish and that's the essence of it. Who wants to grow up when being a kid can be so much fun?

In the 3 and half months that I have known you I have seen enough to realise that you make one of my coolest and best friends and the fact that we are meeting up in Mumbai this sem hols (I wont take a no) and we have a marriage to look forward to in the next and then 8 more sems after that, seems short when I have people like you here in college. How I wish college could continue forever so that we could continue our buckchodi forever.

Mentioning at the last (very definitely not the least) is a person who is so sweet that almost the entire batch nods and smiles in acknowledgement when they see her. Thats a feat very rare to achieve. Being sweet to everyone is not possible for an ordinary person.  That makes her extra ordinary aye? That she is..
Anju

What do I say? Life would have been totally different here had it not been for you. The first day at admission I saw you I thought it was someone else from LST Mumbai. A person who was actually really dumb and I  was surprised she managed to get into GNLU. It was only later that I realised that it was not her and someone else from Bangalore. You were the last person who became a friend among the above mentioned people yet I feel the closest to you for some strange reason. Maybe its cuz we share so many things in common ranging from love of animals to being a vegetarian, to helping others and what not. It was amazing the way we played the parents in a house full of mad hatters on Su's birthday. That was an unforgettable night and I wonder what might have happened had you not been there.

While I mention you I cant leave out your famed shoulder (remember the reason behind its fame? Cuz I am famous :P ). Its been the best travelling cushion ever. Its strange how quickly we became friends, not to mention how quickly I added you to that list of bestest friends. Your characteristics are so varied. Extremely sweet but your firmness and grip over situations when required are commendable and came into full prominence on the birthday party night. I have hardly ever seen you without a smile and yet the one moment when it was replaced by a sad and hurt look (eco, it sux) it almost crushed me. Its been too cool having you as a friend and there is so much more I wanna speak about, about every one and everything but my fingers and eyes complain.

So I will take leave. A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE THE PAST 4 MONTHS AMONG THE BEST OF MY LIFE. There are loads of unwritten names. Sorry for that but its been impossible to put up anything more. I hope and pray to God that every semester we have this much fun and things go just the way they have.

1 MORE NOTE HERE. PEOPLE FROM GNLU WHO HAVE FRIENDS JUST AS SPECIAL AS MINE AND WANNA DEDICATE A FEW WORDS TO THEM JUST NEED TO SEND ME THE TEXT ON FB. I WILL PUT IT UP THE MOMENT I SEE IT. JUST SPARE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE THIS PLACE LIVELY AND FUN 15 MINUTES.

THANK YOU PEOPLE. ITS BEEN A REAL PLEASURE.
Signing off till the end of the end sem exams.
Buckchod
Lock and Load

Okay, here is the first and its a double cross. I hadnt thought about it, honestly. But since I made the promise here is what Anju has to say about me.
Buckchod

I don't know where to start when it comes to this guy. He is one among the best people'I've ever met. It might seem to people that I've barely known him three months, but Sanket, being the open book that he is, is tremendously easy to know =) and when you do get to know him, trust me, you will not regret it. The fierce loyalty he has when it comes to not just his friends, but anyone he is close to is not something that can be passed off as common. Because there is no way he is common. He is special, very special. He always has a funny story to tell or some sort of buckchodi to pelufy =P.

What's best about him is the degree he'll go to help or worry about a friend who's low and then even manage to make them feel better. Talking from experience here. Nothing worries him, absolutely nothing. Come what may, he's calm and smiling, no chuckling, and wondering why the others around him are so worked up. Again, talking from experience =P One moment you'll see him telling someone yet another funny story and the next moment you'll see this transition where he's being so sensible and pravtical about something that you'll be like, "who are you and what have you done to Sanket?!" =D
I know that all of us have 9 more semesters of each other's company and all our buckchodi and for this I have one word- Woohoo! =D
